Mercury
Collection
Mercury is a toxic
substance that can be harmful to both people and wildlife. Mercury can be
found in homes in mercury fever thermometers, mercury thermostats and
switches. Mercury is safe while sealed in these devices. However, when these
instruments are thrown away, mercury can be exposed to the environment
causing serious environmental hazards.
Do not throw your mercury devices into the garbage. The CCSWA and the Dept.
of Environmental Protection (DEP) will recycle them for you. Bring your
mercury thermometers, switches and thermostats to our office. We will make
sure that these potentially harmful instruments are recycled and disposed of
properly. If you possess liquid mercury in vials (elemental mercury), please
contact DEP at (570) 327-3646. For more information on DEP’s mercury
program, visit their website at
www.dep.state.pa.us.
