In 1989, the Centre County Solid Waste Authority began the implementation of a major recycling program for the county.  Construction began on an intermediate processing facility and the Authority began to purchase the necessary equipment to provide curbside collection, commercial collection and drop-off services to the residents of Centre County

Recycling services were provided to approximately 15,000 residents, 500 commercial establishments and The Pennsylvania State University.  Over 80 drop-off sites were established throughout the County to afford all residents the opportunity to recycle.  The Pennsylvania Municipal Waste Planning, Recycling, and Waste Reduction Act (Act 101 of 1988) set a recycling goal of 25%, to be reached by 1997.  In 1993, Centre County was one of six in Pennsylvania to attain that goal with a rate of 27.5%.

Now

With over 20,000 curbside residents, 125 drop-off recycling bins and over 500 commercial establishments throughout the county, Centre County residents along with the Pennsylvania State University continue to recycle.  As well as continuing to recycle the required materials by state law (Act 101), we have provided Centre County residents with opportunities to recycle special materials such as electronics and household hazardous waste through special collections held once a year.  Almost 15 years later, Centre County's recycling rate has climbed to over 50% and continues to rise.
